Salem is a small town where everyone knows everyone. I have lived here my entire life and have always loved this small, lovely town. There is everything you need here, including grocery stores, libraries, coffee shops, a Chickfila, and a wonderful school system. Salem has an old time main street. This street has small businesses and restaurants on both sides, lined with lamp posts which are constantly redecorated for each of the different holidays. This town has a very Hallmark movie feel to it, which I love! This small, 14 square mile town is completed with a family friendly community. The Salem High School football games is where you can find all of Salem's residents. Salem revolves around our hard working football team, and all of Salem goes to the football games for support. Salem is the perfect town and it is my dream to one day raise a family here.
Absolutely no diversity within this area. The schools located here put athletics before academics and students who aren't athletes don't receive the same "glory" and privileges athletes do. There's also a lot of internal racism, ignorance, and raunchy confederate supporters who don't have any consideration for minority groups. If you're able to ignore all of that, living here is generally pleasant and most people can be very kind. If you aren't a minority and you don't care too much for diversity or care for learning about other cultures, this place is for you. Uneventful, never-changing, ignorant Salem :)
I enjoy living in Salem. We live in a valley, so the views of the surrounding mountains are beautiful. It's a small to medium size town with a hometown feeling. Salem is very clean and people take pride in their homes and businesses. It's a safe place to live, and less than an hour's drive to 2 major lakes, Claytor Lake and Smith Mountain Lake. The education system is also a focus and we have a high-rated school system.
