Salem is truly a great micro city. The main flaws being inflation and the tourism getting to an almost unbearable level. I would give 5 stars but it seems like the local government doesn’t actually care about the community and really is focused on tourism. I do get that, it’s an extremely important element in keeping this vibrant community of small local businesses alive and running. A perfect example of this would be that within the past couple years Salem has put a new improved “community” garden which in all reality is a closed garden. It’s beautiful! It’s wonderful to look at, however right behind the garden there is a baseball field that was used constantly by this small neighborhood behind The Plummer Youth Promise. Not only have they completely ignored an update but they’ve completely neglected to even tend to the field this year. Whoever was in charge of this project should genuinely be ashamed.
I work in a bar in downtown Salem and live in the midst of everything too. I love Halloween and want to make it better. We just grabbed the witch thing even though millions of women around the world were being killed by the christians for being exotic. I can't believe that we bring in the cops to throw everyone out at 10pm in the whole town. Those politicians, christians, and cops turn their noses up at a good party. Most all the tourists know it's a show and respect it, I do wish they would all wear costumes though and put there friggin' phones away for a day and have some fun being part of the show. We ain't disney and things get way creepier when it's not Halloween. This stupid having no fun after ten is an insult directly to me as I work hard to make my money and the lawmakers probably lost me 5 large. Anyways, come on in, we ain't perfect yet, but I'll work on it. I serve drinks and make wands and walking sticks. This is my month and if I hear a stupid church bell...
My overall experience in Salem has been wonderful. There are incredible restaurants and plenty to do in such a small town. I feel that Salem is extremely safe and a great place to raise a family. Salem is a melting pot and is diverse. There are many great school systems and great teachers who are supportive of seeing students achieve success. I felt like it was an amazing place to grow up where I have made many lifelong friends. I could see myself raising a family here in the future. I love Halloween and this town makes October an extremely fun month to live here. If there is anything I would like to see change is a better parking protocol during the busy tourist months due to residents having trouble finding ample parking.
