I've lived in Royalton Twp for 13 years and in Berrien County my whole life. I cannot imagine a better place to raise my children. The area has very low crime and *excellent* schools. There are beautiful, clean parks and beaches nearby. Many stable employers in the area. A possible drawback is that St. Joseph is not known to be very diverse; however, diversity has been growing in the past several years as Whirlpool attracts families from all over the world.
Small town where you would want to raise a family
There's usually a lot to in St. Joe though typically when it's warm. Things such as walking the pier, the bluff, or boating out on the lake. The winter months can be long, cold, and boring.
There is a school (elementary) less than a mile away, so there are no sex offenders within several miles. It is a very safe area. Quaint family-owned store down the block. Fields of wheat and corn nearby.
Crime is not a constant concern for me. Police are usually present on roadways.
The weather in the late summer is usually nice. The fall weather can be perfect. The long winter drags into April, and unfortunately low gray clouds are usually present.
There is a strong need for great restaurants in this area. Most of the food served is processed, boxed, or canned.
There are not many opportunities for young professionals to entry the work field.
Summer weather is great, a few very hot days...but not too many. Fall is usually my favorite and a great sweatshirt or sweater is a must. Winters can be harsh although we've only had 1-2 bad ones in the last 10yrs. Good boots and a coat are needed. Springs tend to be cool and wet.
Parking downtown is awful and time limits should be better enforced. Can be frustrating for the locals in the summertime. Not much in the way of public transportation available. Main roads need better lanes for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Parking downtown in the summer is the worst, there are not enough parking spots...something should be done about it. Other than that the fire/police are great and seem to have good response times.
There are a lot of options for grocery, drugstore, drycleaners and restaurants. Many chains, but just as many mom-and-pop shops. Only thing we don't have is a lot of retail clothing....like a decent mall.
A lot of great restaurants offering a variety of food and at all different price ranges. Not much open late in the evenings though. Not sure about the nightlife/bars as I am a minor.
Housing costs tend to be higher in the area than surrounding areas probably in large part due to the lake. There are lakefront properties worth a lot of money and smaller, more modest homes. A lot of rental properties in the area, some year-round and some are just vacation type rentals. Most people take care of their property.
Not much major or violent crime in the area...vehicle break-ins are probably biggest issue and are random. Police are visible quite a bit...on foot, in a vehicle and on bicycles.
Several large employers like Whirlpool and local hospital provide opportunities for adults. Jobs for teenagers tend to be more seasonal and can be hard to find.
