I grew up in Ronkonkoma, and being a part of Long Island, there is a big conservative/racist population. There is hardly any diversity, I knew a couple non-white kids but overall not many. The lake is contaminated, there isn’t much to do, and the town itself isn’t kept very clean. Ronkonkoma overall has a lot of shaping up to do. It’s alright, but only if you’re middle class and white.
Ronkonkoma in general is a quiet place. For the most part the people there are friendly. For a suburban area it isn't very striking, however, it is full of charm. Lake Ronkonkoma is very pretty especially in the summer. It is very close to a few malls and New York City is just an hour train ride away or an hour drive if there isn't traffic. There are many beaches that are around a 15-30 minute drive away and there is just so much to see.
I’ve lived here for the past 16 years. It’s very easy to make friends and/or just talk to your neighbors. Overall, it has been pretty safe and schools around here are good. Would recommend anyone to live here.
