I enjoyed the natural aspects of Riverside. As a teenager, there is much to do from biking in the summer to ice skating in the winter. There are a good amount of job opportunities locally including an exclusive swim club as well as a small downtown area with restaurants. I love how easy it is to commute to my high school- most students walk or bike due to the short distance. You can also jump on the train or expressway and get to Downtown Chicago in ~30 minutes or less. Lastly, I enjoy the feeling of connection throughout the community through local events or performances at the high school.
I grew up in Riverside. It's a beautiful, quiet community that celebrates its history and as a near-west suburb of Chicago is an easy commute downtown. The village has beautiful natural areas and lovely homes. The community is very family friendly and in recent years has added new local restaurants and shops, though night life is very minimal. My biggest critiques are that it lacks racial diversity (is mostly white) and leans politically conservative.
I'm glad we chose to live here. It's a fantastic place to raise kids. They'll get a small town experience, and the city is just close enough. Yes, taxes are high, but you're generally getting what you pay for: top-notch public schools (the elementary schools seem more like private schools), beautiful atmosphere (the whole village is a class 2 arboretum), the library is amazing, our emergency services are excellent. Very special holiday events in town - the cutest July 4th parade, a fun winter stroll (town party). Walking around, you're seeing historic homes, you can fish in the Des Plaines river, stop and get a $2 soft-serve from Aunt Diana's sweet shop. People are friendly without being intrusive; I've found the standoffishness is often more imagined than real. Make no assumptions, folks. There has been a recent influx of young families from the city. It's safe; kids ride bikes and walk to and from school themselves. Easy shopping nearby. Close to the Brookfield zoo.
