I grew up in Richlands, North Carolina. I like that Richlands is a smaller community outside of larger Jacksonville. The people are hospitable and the community leans on each other to grow and inspire. The schools are great for the area, particularly the high school. The housing market is decent, as there are more options in Richlands for those wanting to escape the city life in Jacksonville. My main concerns are that everything closes early, even on weekends. There isn't much to do besides shop and go out to eat, but Jacksonville is only about fifteen minutes away. Overall it is a nice place to live if you want a quiet, suburban lifestyle.
The police department here is a joke. I once called in to report a car accident right behind my house and the police department told me I had to call the highway patrol (even though its a residential road) and then when I called highway patrol no one answered! I see people flying down residential roads, constantly crashing off the roads in the same areas but still no speed trap there. I very rarely see police pulling people over at all for speeding.
We live in a largely military community. We do not plan on staying here, because the military subculture does not fit in with our goals and values. Also, the community is not well designed to encourage physical activity (cannot walk/ ride bikes in most areas due to no sidewalks nor shoulders on roadways). There are several very nice community parks, but they are all within driving distance. Overall, it is a nice community. However, it is not a good fit for our family.
