The town was booming as late as the early 90s, but when the Air Force moved out in 1993, the towns economy understandably took a hit. Half the population up and left. Under the current mayor Chuck Smith however, The town is slowly being returned to its former glory, with a new sports complex coming that will attract tourism as well as a fall in crime rate, Rantoul is becoming a better place to live every day.

Rantoul was a military town and still has many of the unique properties in the area. Unfortunately the growth in Rantoul has not happened, of what was forecasted. But there are many jobs that can still be found in the area, affordable living, a bike trail, a few good restaurants, some good shopping, small parks for fishing and for the children to play and the town does put on many family activities.
I love the small town feel and the fact that you get to know people who become like family. However, there is little to no growth in the town and nothing positive in the community for the youth to do. There are very little job opportunities and the schools are not the best in preparing kids for a successful future. They have some great teachers but for students who need extra supports, they do not have those supports in place.
