My family moved to the area about three years ago, and so far it's been pretty nice living here. There are a few downsides; with there being a few hills and foliage, there isn't a lot of light provided for people on the street. It gets really dark around night time, which is nice sometimes, but it poses a threat to drivers and pedestrians. Some drivers also like to speed around a lot which again puts others in danger and creates a lot of noise during both days and nights. Everything else is generally peaceful though, very little to no crime, nice scenery, good schools, and shopping areas.
Rancho San Diego, and outlier of El Cajon CA is a great community to live in. It's a relatively safe and quaint neighborhood with small businesses, movie theater, multiple grocery stores, restaurants and schools. This part of El Cajon is like a small community unto itself. The parks and YMCA help make this neighborhood a great place for families with children.
I like Rancho San Diego, as it is diverse and well taken care of community. The schools in the area are very good, and the community colleges are very good as well for students not pursuing a 4-year path. I would say that I wished there was more connection in the community with like a farmers market or something, because we really don't have that here. With more community activities Rancho would become even more amazing than it already is.
