There are certainly better towns as well as worse. Like many towns in Oklahoma, Podunk is poorer than many small towns you’ll find in other parts of the country, but for OK, it’s average. It isn’t very diverse, aside from the mostly white “Native American” folks who have something like 1/96th native blood lol. The rest are fully white conservative Christians. A few yellow dog Democrats from back in the day around as well.
I lived in the town for a few years and never did fall in love with it. Anytime something nice or endearing would happen, it would get soured by someone being nasty or something depressing happening. So goes life in rural Oklahoma, I suppose. It is in a nice place as far as scenery, being near the ouchiata forest. The larger city of Fort Smith, AR (88k population) is about 30-40 mins way if you need more to do or access to more stores. Which you usually will.
All and all not bad, but not a place I’d seek out to retire or anything.

Poteau is a very unique town. It's pretty in some places and ugly in other places. The crime is bad for such a small city. Traffic is bad. Schools are kinda okay, but the kids are wild lol. I wouldn't put my kids in school in leflore County. If you like drugs you are in luck. There is literally any kind you want available. I had fun partying in this town, but thats about all it is good for if you ask me. Even for oklahoma poteau's stats are poor. And really all of leflore County is pretty rough. Actually the weather is pretty good here, other than occasional tornadoes.
A great small, but not too small town. If you enjoy not knowing everyone, but still getting the hospitality and kindness of a small town, then Poteau is your place.
