It's my home. Epitome of the oppression. But can only oppress if you allow it. I was born and raised, and come from a family of HS graduates. Most of us have degrees or are seeking one or plan to. My grandfather is a retired Reverend so we are very religious, wether it be in the church or traditiona Native American beliefs of both. Growing up in a family where religion and education are taught to be 2 important aspects of life, I am grateful. I believe being raised with such values have allowed me to overcome many obstacles in life in which I may have not otherwise.
Pine Ridge is very small community, but filled with many community members who love their Lakota culture. Though the community is rich in culture, poverty is very high. Many young adults, children, and adolescents face hardships and adversities due to lack of resources and the high level poverty.
We have a huge problem with alcoholism on our reservation. I hope and pray that we may find a solution to our problem. By me getting the education that I need, I feel that I can be of some help to our people. I've had many struggles throughout my life but I'm overcoming them now. I want to be a role- model to young people especially women.
