Piedmont is a classist first and fairly racist little, priveleged hamlet surrounded by the extremely diverse Oakland. It incorporated itself specifically in response to the migration of African-Americans drawn to Oakland around the turn of the century. The schools are top-notch, but the kids that attend them would do well no matter what because they are from wealthy, educated families. They often struggle after graduation because they have never dealt with people outside their class or race. There are unusually high rates of drug and alcohol use and high rates of suicide. The town elected an openly homophobic, racist and xenophobic mayor (but he was forced to resign). Two stars for pretty foliage and nice parks (which they have the legal right to ask you to leave if you're not a resident).

Piedmont is an unusually closely knit community with exceptionally affluent and well-educated families. It is a small community it of 12,000 residents surrounded circumferentially by Oakland. Because of this fact, it is culturally diverse, and property values are depressed to reasonably affordable levels due to the crime rates of the surrounding East Bay communities. Piedmont itself, however, is exceptionally safe. (Its school district ranks #1 for safety among greater San Francisco metropolitan area school districts.) Notable current or former Piedmont residents include Ambassador Chris Stephens, Clint Eastwood, Amanda Stevenson, Sarah Chin, Charles Schwab, Stephen Curry, Reggie Jackson, Stephen Bechtel, and Jack London.
The benefits of living here are significant:
If we lived in Oakland we would pay for private schooling.
Security is good - a bit of a rabbit warren with a strong neighbourhood watch scheme and cameras on entrance roads.
Piedmont has its own police and fire departments. There is a small area for the police to patrol and in emergencies, the police/fire/medic vehicles are onsite within 2-4 minutes.
Piedmont enjoys temperate weather so air conditioning/pools aren't essential.
Piedmont Ave and College Ave are close and provide restaurant and shopping options.
The economics of having an appreciating asset vs spending money for a higher cost of living made the decision easy for us.
