I'm only 11 years old, but I have lived here for more than 7 years and has really been a welcoming community for me! It welcomed me well in preschool, I went to Wildwood school and I can strongly say that all the teachers were very friendly and nice. I have also made a ton of friends throughout the years! I think that my experience in Piedmont has been very good and I have really enjoyed living here and hope to keep living here throughout the years.
Piedmont is a classist first and fairly racist little, priveleged hamlet surrounded by the extremely diverse Oakland. It incorporated itself specifically in response to the migration of African-Americans drawn to Oakland around the turn of the century. The schools are top-notch, but the kids that attend them would do well no matter what because they are from wealthy, educated families. They often struggle after graduation because they have never dealt with people outside their class or race. There are unusually high rates of drug and alcohol use and high rates of suicide. The town elected an openly homophobic, racist and xenophobic mayor (but he was forced to resign). Two stars for pretty foliage and nice parks (which they have the legal right to ask you to leave if you're not a resident).
Piedmont is a wonderful community. People are very smart, highly educated, ambitious, energetic, volunteer a lot for and in the schools, and are interested in having a good family life. It is also very beautiful owing to the city having high expectations for property owners in their remodeling and landscaping adventures. It is a great place to make friends with other families with kids the same age. The hills make for perfect walking exercise. The surrounding area has the best restaurants and performances you could ever want.
