I lived in Petersburg for 16 years and owned 2 different historic homes. If you can get past the fact that Petersburg has very little to offer other then it's cheap historic homes, it might be the place for you. It is just 20 minutes south of Richmond and 10 minutes from much nicer but more expensive suburban areas, but while there are nice places to eat and some great antique stores, you will have to leave Petersburg for EVERYTHING else. You will also most likely eventually be the victim of a crime if you live there. The very small historic areas are surrounded by horrible slums. The city is poorly run and recently came close to being bankrupt. If anyone tells you it's on it's way up, they've been saying that for decades. It never happens. If you have the thought to live there, PLEASE drive around it first. But if you are looking to buy a huge renovated old property and could put up with everything else, including high taxes that bring you nothing, Petersburg may be for you.

Not the ideal place for single black female college student to thrive. I currently live on a college campus but I'm planning to move off by next semester. I work 8 minutes away from where I live and I get off late at night. I always feel like I'm being followed home from work. There are a lot of dark backroads I can't help but think there shouldn't be many cars out the time of night but always some car out cruising. I guess that's the downside to living in a small town, slow area, everyone notices every little thing.
Being a military family we enjoy having the base close to a mass majority of different shopping outlets and grocery markets. And within 30 to 45 minutes to the international airport for travel.
But also being near the local military installation with the surrounding area of Petersburg is very unsafe except for minimal areas plus a lot of personnel living in the local areas there’s so much uncleanliness and trash just everywhere like nobody even cares.
