Very pretty, sleepy small town in southern NH with a small but decent arts scene and expensive organic food. Nearby Mount Monadnock keeps Peterborough closely connected to other surrounding communities like Jaffrey, Hancock and Keene. Great place to live if you want a quiet life, but for traditional “fun” amenities and nightlife there’s not much here. Lots of great outdoor stuff though. Most of the residents are either old hippies or young families (the public schools here are good). A few really wealthy people with vacation homes. Like I said, sleepy.
Also I’m not sure where Niche gets their info, but this town is not “dense suburban” nor does it “lean conservative”. The density of this town is less than 200 people per square mile and aside from the downtown area is pretty rural. And it voted Democrat in the last election by nearly 40 points, it’s definitely one of the LEAST conservative towns in the whole state (like I said, hippies)

I grew up here so maybe I'm biased but Peterborough really is a gem of a small town. The school system is great and there's a very special tight-knit and caring community here. The downtown is nice and there's a lot of local shops, restaurants and art exhibits to check out. There are a ton of trails and hiking spots throughout town; if you love the outdoors this is a fantastic place to be. It has more of hippy-dippy feel than some other surrounding towns, but that's part of its charm. I definitely disagree with Niche's assessment that residents typically lean conservative and I've never found that to be the case. People are very independent-minded in this area and well educated.
The only real negative I can think of about Peterborough is the lack of industry. There's the schools, the hospital, and a lot of small businesses, but not much else in the way of jobs. It's also not very diverse and the overwhelming majority of people are white, like most of northern New England.

If it was not for the natural beauty of the Mountains I would have moved already. Besides 2 police officers, the entire force is useless.
Since Covid, all the good small stores and restaurants have closed which was really the towns main appeal. The Bike trails are nice, but sidewalks and roads are garbage since the bridgework began and now a large crane has fallen in the river polluting it. I live downtown on the main road and the traffic of large trucks for a small town really should be diverted somewhere else. The road cannot handle the large loads. There are maybe 15 black people in the entire town, some of which are my friends and yet the white rich people hold up signs saying BLM but they would never give them a pot to piss in they just hold signs which changes nothing. I will be moving in a year or so as the beauty of the land is not worth it any more.
