Parkersburg Reviews

I grew up here in the 80's-90's. It used to be a quiet, safe little town. There were things for kids to do, but now there is really no where to take your kids except some sketchy parks. Over the last decade, it's gone down hill fast. I had to get out. It's full of drugs and is downright dangerous. The city takes no pride in its history. They tear down historic buildings for parking lots so people can do their shady dealings as businesses downtown are scarce. I'd guess that about 80% of their downtown is "for lease" - the rent is high, likely still paying off the floodwall - built 72 years ago. You can't even walk downtown without seeing someone tweaked out of their mind or just walking around because they have no home. It's sad. The remaining beautiful old homes lost their value due to the trashy areas around them. Parkersburg is about 20 years behind the average city as far as stores/restaurants. If you must go there, look for places outside city limits or across the river.
I love this town especially with gas prices because everything is close and convenient! They also have an amazing community College.
Rust belt-ish city with a major drug problem, although not unusual for West Virginia. There's really not anything to do here, would recommend leaving the city and heading out to Mountwood or McDonough if you'd like to go on a walk or a hike. It's not very safe crime-wise in Parkersburg, with theft, vandalism, and assault sharply on the rise. Be careful not to step on needles and check your water bottles for heroin holes. Also get a water filter, you'll need it thanks to certain chemical corporations dumping toxic chemicals into the Ohio River and the local water supply. Increased rate of cancer as a result of that as well.
It's not a diverse city either, little bit racist, but it's better than the state as a whole I guess. The local restaurants are very good however, and you've got to try some if you're in the area.
Go to Williamstown or Marietta OH instead: they're not great but they're better than the burg.
