Palatka is the small town that I have grown up in for most of my life. Growing up the main description of Palatka I heard was “retirement town.” Life here is slow-paced and anticlimactic. It is not for everyone, however, one thing I enjoy about growing up in Palatka was the close-knit community. Everyone knows just about everyone. Due to this growing up whenever I made a friend I could always count on finding my way back to them later in life. I can honestly say that I have some relation with at least 50% of the class of 2023 throughout Palatka. However, Palatka can also be a dangerous place due to the lack of investment in its youth. I have watched many kids I once knew turn to drugs, drinking, and gangs. The main school of is Palatka High School. It is known not for its scholars. It is known for its fights, strict rules, and worn-down teachers. I wish to one day see a stronger level of investment in the youth of Palatka that will spark academic success in our future generations.
Although Palatka is a small town in Florida that no one would be able to pinpoint on a map or even see on the local news, it is a cozy town that is trying to improve itself each day. With its close vicinity to three popular cities in Florida including St. Augustine, Jacksonville and Gainesville, it is a perfect place to stay and save on traveling expenses that would be increased due to tourism. The town and its people are aware of this, and are currently in the works on capitalisng off its advantage, whilst still keeping its small town and cultural charm. There are large murals all across its downtown of local shops that represent its importance of being one of the largest ports and almost largest city in Florida during the 1800's before a large fire during the Seminole war in 1836.
I have been in Palatka, Florida for over 12 years and seeing the small urbanization steps my community has taken along with awareness has been very inspirational since our city struggles in crime and poverty. Palatka has gotten alot of recognition from its successful small businesses but when Covid-19 hit, everything was much more difficult for hundreds of places to even hire or stay open. My dad is an EMS/ firefighter for the county and seeing his experience first hand makes me envious of the lacking benefits and wages they receive . Along with my mothers struggle to find a local job that provides funds to help not only our family and my medical conditions but my grandparents as well. In the future I hope to see sexual education and better health resources available for the youth. In addition, our hospital is the worst ranked and the services are incredibly limited so seeing that improve would change our town.
