Oshtemo is a great place to live. It is in the Kalamazoo Public Schools district which gives families there the opportunity to send their kids to school and get the Kalamazoo Promise to go to college with tuition paid. My neighborhood is very safe and we have never had incidents of crime. The local government does their job and communicates with citizens, the law enforcement does their job and is personable and helpful. Local facilities such as parks, libraries, restaurants, and trails are quality and provide for a family friendly, community oriented lifestyle. In my neighborhood I know the majority of my neighbors, the people are friendly, and we have a strong neighborhood community environment.
Kalamazoo is a very diverse place to live. The crime rate continues to go up, and that is deferring people from wanting to live in the area. Our family has stayed due to the Kalamazoo Promise, witch pays 100% of my tuition for 100 plus college credits. Amazing! However, we have to ask ourselves why this came about? The amount of kids graduating from Kalamazoo public schools was on a decrease and even less were going to college and graduating. The Promise has risen those rates and will hopefully continue to improve. The classroom atmosphere is ruff, and it remains hard to focus and stay on track, at is not cool to pay attention in class and receive good grades. I have struggled these last 4 years as I have somewhat submitted to some of the peer pressures. My mom has always told me, " Those kids on the steps hanging out will be there when your done accomplishing your goals " I have held on to that thought with my love for baseball and planes. I am now looking forward to starting fresh and aiming for better GPA in college. I know now I want to be smart and I want to get good grades. Those who don't will be there when I'm done getting my degree and becoming a productive part of society.
