Orchard Park was a great place to grow up and I ended up moving back to raise my family there. It offers great schools, safety, beautiful houses and parks ,with plenty of shops and services. It is only 20 minutes from Buffalo, but seems like different world. Lots of the reviewers claim that its not diverse which is true, but thats probably a plus for many of the residents who choose to live there. Diversity is not necessarily a good thing and Orchard Park's high home prices and taxes dictate who lives there anyway. If you have to live in NY State, then OP is the place to be!
Growing up as a person of color in a predominately white area is tough. The school system is great, but the people can be the opposite. There is always money invested in this town and not allocated to poorer or underdeveloped areas in the city of Buffalo, the "City of Good Neighbors". In this town many people feel as though nothing bad can happen and they choose to ignore things that are apparent and happening in society that are very important matters. Being a POC, everyone in this town knows of you and your family. They are always staring probably at the color of my skin, judging, making negative assumptions, and that is not a good feeling. Orchard Park has good people and people that want to fight the good fight, but not everyone chooses to show that. This town, I am sure, is like many other predominately white towns across America.
I like Orchard Park! It is a good place to live with kids. There are lots of sports teams, clubs, and extracurriculars for people of all ages.
