I have only been a citizen here for five years. I find the county of Orangeburg to be a rural area with a generation of family-oriented folk. Most of all, they are all connected in one way or another through the community. It's tranquil once 6 pm comes around unless it is a major holiday like the fourth of July or the New Year ringing-in.
Outside of church and work. The only thing that I would like to see differently here is more cuisine and entertainment for adults and children. Without these things, people become limited to outside activities with or without their children.

It's a low cost town with a wonderful mix of cultures and a rich history of Southern farming. Orangeburg has a larger black population than white, which is part of the reason it still has authentic charm: many of the families here go way back to pre share-cropper times when black families worked doggedly to farm their land until they became the legal owners. Hence, family names and family lands are a common sight here. Orangeburg also has a flourishing college and university combined campus here: University of South Carolina and the historic Claflin University, founded in 1869 share the same real estate with ongoing expansion of facilities as well as programs.
Orangeburg is bustling but not crazy, so you can get to work in a reasonable amount of time each day. There is a genuine family-owned milling company here--Orangeburg Milling Company still processes grains at its original site right here in town. I see I'm out of space, must stop.

Orangeburg, South Carolina is a small town that has the potential to be a great town, because of its location between the capital (Columbia) and Charleston. Orangeburg has not progressed in the last 30 years. So many talented and smart people were born here but left and took their talents and skills elsewhere. The town was left with people who lack vision and progression. The downtown area is nothing but old dilapidated buildings. Other small towns such as Aiken SC have created a thriving robust downtown with progressive local small businesses. Orangeburg can do the same with the right kind of progressive, smart, business minded, inclusive leadership. Revitalization needs to happen quickly if this town wants to survive. Visionary leadership that serves everyone.
