Olympia is the perfect blend of the feel of being a small/mid-size city with big city amenities in a beautiful location! It’s within easy reach of big cities (Seattle and Portland), major airports, and the coast. It’s affordable (by west coast standards). What more could one ask for!?!
The environment around Olympia is gorgeous. A couple hours at most from both the Olympic Mountains and the Cascade Range, great hiking, backpacking, and camping is everywhere. The city is not very safe, especially at night, as the homeless population is highly present and infused with drug and mental health issues. If any possessions are left in public places they will most likely be stolen within the hour. Politically, this area is very inclusive and accepting of many ideas... as long as they are democratic. This can be both beautiful and frustrating. Extremely liberal, many conservative ideas and values are downplayed or completely ignored.
Olympia is such a gem- you can truly find every kind of person here. It's full of creativity, quirkiness, and lots of good coffee shops. Everything you could need is always a short bike or bus ride away, and the local food options are endless and delicious. There's all sorts of parks and trails to spend time in the beautiful lush outdoors, and always events happening indoors downtown if that's more your style. There's just as many hot and sunny days as there are gray, rainy, dreary ones, so make sure to be ready to invest in a sunlight lamp!
The city is unique and accepting of all, and I highly recommend a visit to anyone heading towards the PNW. Olympia truly has something for everyone.
