The residents in northeast Iowa, in general, are very friendly and really show they care about what matters and Oelwein is no exception to this standard. I always enjoy hearing about someone getting recognized even for what may seem irrelevant or trivial. A prime example of this is the Clapper Award which is given each month to a resident in the town of Oelwein who has an exceptional neat and tidy yard. Yes, sometimes it is the little things in life. Can you imagine living next to someone who didn't care at all how their property looked? I have lived next to neighbors who didn't clean up their yard in a different state and it affected me negatively, indeed. For the most part, the community does show mutual respect in this regard and this makes the town stand out and shine bright.
Oelwein is a small comfortable town. I would like to see a few things changed here though. Like the roads need patching and fixed. Abandoned buildings need to be repurposed or torn down. Etc. The schools are okay, but my experience with the staff personally have been mostly negative.
This town is not the greatest in all means with different things to go do and work. I work at a gas station and we are very busy since their is only a couple in town. Oelwein is a drug town, where a lot of drug are being done and I don't care to be around these things. I'm just trying to get my degree and get out of the town.
