After a year of house hunting, we settled on Oakland in 2014. Initially, we had reservations about Oakland: long commute NYC, no downtown, mediocre reputation, high property taxes.
I am happy to report that I was entirely wrong! The commute is easy - I've had hardly any issues commuting commuting to Hoboken or NYC in 5 years. Oakland also offers many wonderful benefits to residents. The town is burgeoning, as evidenced by the Great Oak Park, the friendly walking traffic, the excellent schools, the breathtaking library, and the general down to earth quality that can appear missing from adjacent towns. The options for home buying are unmatched! You can find an expansive Colonial for hundreds of thousands less than in other Bergen towns. Most homes offer a pool, offer a comfortable amount of space between lots, and are beautifully landscaped. I highly recommend Oakland to any fellow Manhattanites who are tired of their shoe box apartments!

I think Oakland is a united, strong community that comes to together to support local businesses, and youth programs in the area. I always remembered a sports team set up outside a store, raising money for the team and I would always see others donating money for them, whether that be multiple dollars or whatever change they could find. Regardless, our town does everything we can to help each other.
After 2 years of house hunting in Bergen county, we were fortunate to find our dream home in Oakland. A year and a half of living in town, we have fallen in love with the town. It is very quiet, family friendly, and safe. We like the spaced out properties and the woodsy feel of the town. The downtown is a underdeveloped but has a great potential. The taxes are high but the public school are great. Overall, Oakland is a pretty solid choice in Bergen county.
