After a year of house hunting, we settled on Oakland in 2014. Initially, we had reservations about Oakland: long commute NYC, no downtown, mediocre reputation, high property taxes.
I am happy to report that I was entirely wrong! The commute is easy - I've had hardly any issues commuting commuting to Hoboken or NYC in 5 years. Oakland also offers many wonderful benefits to residents. The town is burgeoning, as evidenced by the Great Oak Park, the friendly walking traffic, the excellent schools, the breathtaking library, and the general down to earth quality that can appear missing from adjacent towns. The options for home buying are unmatched! You can find an expansive Colonial for hundreds of thousands less than in other Bergen towns. Most homes offer a pool, offer a comfortable amount of space between lots, and are beautifully landscaped. I highly recommend Oakland to any fellow Manhattanites who are tired of their shoe box apartments!

What I like most about Oakland is the safety, and opportunity of the town. Growing up, middle schoolers and high schoolers of Oakland would frequent the town restaurants after school, with many different options. You don't have to worry about safety in this town for sure. Because of the many businesses, jobs are easy to get here, especially for high schoolers.
Oakland is an interesting town. In the eastern and central regions you have standard outer-suburbs, and in the northwestern and southerwestern part of the town you have mountains and rural enviroment.

Nice fishing, good hiking and some mountain biking and a LOT of horse stables.

Interesting politics aswell, mainly moderate republican in the suburban parts and more socially conservative in the mountainous parts.
