The town is overcrowded and run down in most area's. The better areas are overpriced old buildings, small apartments with unbearable levels of noise inside and out. Obnoxious, ill mannered, loud neighbors who party night and day. Too many rental units with overcrowding of multiple generational families. Mix of lower income demographics with 3rd world country feel. Lot's of garbage and dog crap abounds. Schools are terrible, english is second language, commute is horrible into NYC due to unbearable traffic delays daily, parking a nightmare. Need a car to go shopping, etc. since nothing here. There's no sense of community, not much diversity. Not a commuters paradise, or good for families or singles. And getting very expensive with not much to offer. Much better NJ areas than here.
I grew up in North Bergen, and currently live in the township. It's got several great parks (most notably Braddock Park) and lots of of cool ethnic neighborhoods, especially along Bergenline Avenue.
The old Italian-Americans are still around, but surrounded by Cubans and actual Spaniards. There are also Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Mexicans and most recently Indians and Koreans. During the summer, the Bocci courts in Braddock Park, you can hear the Italian grandpas arguing with the various Hispanic grandpas and the languages are similar enough that they can understand enough to get offended and yet remain friendly. It's hilarious.

As a nearby resident of North Bergen, I am constantly exposed to the life within the town. It is very safe and very diverse. It is family-friendly, and they provide a lot of resources. A few of my favorite places are the north bergen free public library. The staff and the services provided there are phenomenal. Another attraction that I love visiting is the James J. Braddock Park because it is vast. It has something for everyone, whether you are looking for a BBQ/ picnic area, a pond to run around, a place to exercise, a playground for your kids, or simply a place to lay down under a tree and read.
