I moved to new Port Richey in 1981 and at the time it was called Newport rickety because it was a community of Senior citizens and wealthy retired people. It was pristine and West Pasco was placed to be! It has slowly deteriorated and become a high crime town with a lot of drugs. The Value of homes have went down even though the market grew. As soon as they improve in one area, transients and Northerners take over and trash it. If you were born and raised there you may have adjusted to the decline, but if you move there because of its past beauty, you will be very disappointed.
I was born and raised in New Port Richey. The area is riddled with drug addicts and crime. The residents take no care when driving on the roads. I have seen multiple accidents occur due to people speeding, especially when/after it rains. The roads are left unrepaired with many potholes. There are more empty/abandoned plazas/shops than there were 10 years ago. The local government has been trying to destroy communities by adding in apartment complexes, which increases traffic to residential areas. The school system is subpar. We've had multiple teachers and substitute teachers arrested on horrific crimes regarding children in their care. Pasco County Schools are transitioning many schools to STEM schools, which is great for those fields, but reduce funding for the arts. I would not recommend this city for permanent residence. Rent prices are way to high for the quality of housing. You can't find a 2 bed for less than $1,200. Save yourself the trouble and move to Trinity.
If you're looking for a hip and modern up and coming area, look no further! New Port Richey is what you need! Words do not do this place justice, you just need to see for yourself. Take a stroll down Main Street and you will soon see what I mean. From the brand new park and playground with a splash pad for kids, is a perfect way to spend a nice afternoon with the family. Across from that same park, is a cute hipster themed coffee shop that has the BEST Chai latte I ever did have. Next to that shop, is an artisan Grilled Cheese and family owned Ice Cream Parlor. If you are more of a night on the town kind of person, lucky for you, there are about 15 bars to choose from, including a wine bar, and even a bar with rooftop access! You are bound to find the one that suites you best! Needless to say, New Port Richey is one town that is a MUST SEE when you're in the area.
