It all depends where you live in this city, as the neighborhoods are very different. There are places where crime of any capacity hardly ever takes place and houses are beautiful. These areas would get a 4-5 star rating. Then there are places where drugs and poverty have taken over and no matter how many arrests are made, it makes hardly a difference. Unfortunately, this is where the reputation of this city is made. The police are doing a fantastic and thankless job. Violent crime and crime in general seems to be trending down. Would be great to see the police department expanded to build on their success and for the betterment of this city. There is still a lot of business here and the riverfront property could bring in more if handled properly. A lot of potential to turn this city around but I’m not sure the mayor and council are the right people for the job.
This area has a bad reputation, but my experience has been good. Coming from a very rural area of PA, I wasn't sure what to expect. I feel very safe on Penn State campus. I feel completely safe going to local businesses.
I just moved to New Kensington in August and I have mixed feelings about the neighborhood. As with any place, there are upscale parts and run down parts. I’m in the better part of the neighborhood with people who seem to care about what goes on here. Needless to say, stick with the better part of New Kensington if you’re planning on moving there.
