New Bern positioned at the Y formed by the Neuse and Trent Rivers, watches as Highway 70 gracefully dances across the two rivers to join the local transportation arteries. With Croatan Forest nearby, parks and outdoor recreation are abundant. The Coastal Carolina Regional Airport is easy access to areas surrounding New Bern. If you enter the downtown via the Front St bridge, stop and enjoy Union Point. A short walk leads to the historic district, the birthplace of Pepsi Cola, art studios, small businesses that offer tastes of local trade, walking paths that cross through the middle of the downtown, unique restaurant fare, beautiful architecture, and nature. As you explore don’t miss seeing the Tryon Palace, its gardens, or going on a Bear hunt to find the statues that are a recognizable trademark of the town. They are located throughout downtown and areas best accessed by car. The hunt would be a great destination draw. Please excuse maintenance and small crowded roads downtown.

While I do technically live in New Bern, it is rare for me to go into the city, as I live on its border near Havelock. When I do go, however, I become impressed with the area's rich history ranging from the Revolutionary War to the establishment of PepsiCo. There is a wide variety of stores and New Bern's traffic is rarely congested. Although, there are various areas throughout New Bern where I become concerned with the safety of its neighborhoods because of how unkempt and ghetto they are. The education in New Bern is also arguably average when compared to some of the schools in neighboring towns, such as Havelock High School.
Downtown New Bern is my favorite place. It is right next to the water and the atmosphere is always great. Every time I go downtown, I get the feeling like sun is on my face. There are bear statues everywhere! You must get your picture taken with all of the bears. Birthplace of Pepsi-Cola!
