I was raised in National City. It was a City I once loved! The City looks very run down now. It use be a very charming and unique place to live. You have a lot of renters and section 8 renters in this city, so people don't have a lot of respect for the community. Noise and Animal complaints are not taken seriously. The Police force is short on officers, so they're very slow to act on issues. Schools are poorly underserved. I use to live in front of a school, and the parents would have no place to park in order to pick of their children. They continue to have reoccurring homeless issues, that they can't get under control. Affordability is good, but they do have 10% sales tax. There aren't very many diverse restaurants to choose from in the city. The city has a high population of Mexicans and Filipinos, so their are a lot of taco shops/Mexican/Filipino restaurants. I no longer live in the city, but wish National City the best!!
Overall, I'd say living here is not the worst but it's also not the best, it's very neutral. There are not a lot of conflicts here so it's overall very serene and close to the Plaza Bonita mall however, it's also really far from the more popular areas like Downtown SD, Convoy & Belmont Park. There are some trolley stations that stop near here so I'd say it has okay public transport.
I love National City! It is where I grew up and reside! I have access to local parks, farmers markets, restaurants, healthcare and education. The cost of living is decent and I do not fear for my life when I leave my home.
