University of California - Berkeley Reviews

3
I love the diversity of the students, the wide variety of international perspectives. The traditional student climate is inhospitable to students with dependents, and older re-entry or transfer students. Financial aid has cumbersome and complicated documentation processes for budget adjustments & exceedingly long processing times. Their need for paternalistic oversight of the financial 'guardianship' for students that are smart enough to have earned their acceptance to the #1 Public University in the World, is preposterous! We just completed the Fall 2016 semester & students with families have been forced to live on less than those without dependents! There are hundreds of students that HAVEN'T EVEN RECEIVED FINANCIAL AID PACKAGES YET!!! The reality of evictions, homelessness, and food insecurity makes it exceedingly difficult to be academically competitive.

The area is very easy to get around. The college also have very informative and useful resources. Although I recently moved here, I noticed that they also have many good research and engineering programs. The students are very creative and expressive too. My experience has been unbelievable. Everyday I learn and see something new or even previously seen and it is like opening a unused portion of the brain.
There are plenty of diverse restaurants that serve dishes from Pakistan, Vietnam, Mexico, Ethiopia, Italian and more! Many are affordable and it's always a fun activity to go out with your friends. There aren't many groceries but just some small convenience or liquor stores. There are some retail stores such as Daiso and Urban Outfitters nearby but mostly local, small businesses run this part of town. There are also many small theaters on Shattuck to have a fun time at night!
