We have lived here since 2016. Let me start by stating that this historic neighborhood has tons of potential. There are plenty of good parks, schools, highway , train station, post office and library as well as Fire Department. There are hardly any stores, which I guess is a good thing. Fewer stores limit foot traffic. The down side to that is , the stores we have are not popular franchises and family friendly places. we have the typical Chinese store, Pizza place, family food market ( corner store, mom and pop store etc.). People drive really wreckful and disrespectful, so if you are one to take walks especially with kids and dogs, be vigilant. There are constant car accidents that occur. More car accidents than violent crimes, burglaries and theft combined. Drugs linger in certain parts of the neighborhood, mainly near 7 eleven and surrounding streets. With all things considered, I must say the neighborhood is certainly something to be grateful for. It could be way worse.
It's not the best and not the worst. The problem is there are too many absentee slumlords buying up properties and not maintaining them. And unfortunately many renters are not committed to the neighborhood so do not take care of where they are living, and do not keep the properties clean. Too many people are trashing up this neighborhood which used to be very clean with well kept homes. Gentrification on other parts of the city have pushed lower income and criminal elements to neighborhoods like Wissanoming, Tacony, Mayfair, and other surrounding areas. The positive is there are areas nearby like Frankford Ave, and upper Torresdale Ave. which have many shops decent restaurants, and supermarkets. There has also been new development and shops that have opened up in Wissanoming at Harbison Ave. There are plenty of nearby parks, and the neighborhood is close to the Delaware river, and bridges to New Jersey, as well as highway 95 that makes it convenient to get to Center City.
My parents grew up here and they always told me it was a great place to grow up and a nice neighborhood with nice families and people. That was a few decades ago. While there are there are still the parks and there are lots of stores and shops, the overwhelming majority of people in the neighborhood don’t care about it and have turned the place upside down sadly. Every time I drive through it doesn’t make me happy and doesn’t look good. I don’t live to far away and I know people that live in tacony still, I went to school in the neighborhood for a few years as well and my grandma lived there until a few years ago. But now, the place has gone downhill, there are now a bunch of renters who don’t care about their property and more crime, unfriendly people who don’t care about their appearance, and such... it’s sad to see this happen. There are still some few nice people, blocks and shops/ restaurants around that are from the the nicer time.
