I moved to Somerton, Philadelphia from Jersey City, New Jersey at the end of June. Somerton is a suburban neighborhood and it's very beautiful and quiet compared to urban Jersey City. There's barely any crime here, mostly everybody here is very friendly, and nobody needs to worry about getting a parking ticket due to the fact that vehicles here can be parked anywhere. The only distraction here is loud cars occasionally, but that's it. In addition, I love taking walks here during the night because they make my mind feel very fresh. One thing I would like to see change are the prices of some houses. I've seen numerous overpriced homes and this is due to the red-hot housing market currently. But I hope the market cools down soon so prices of homes here drop.
This place isn't an awful place to be but is not perfect either. One thing that is an issue is how car-centric this place is. If you do not have a car, it is much harder to get around & to and from here compared to other neighborhoods in the city. There also aren't many good close-by parks in the neighborhood unless you're looking for playgrounds.
I live in the "Olde Somerton" neighborhood which is an underrated gem.
People here have enough, neither rich nor poor. Center City is easily accessible but so is a country drive. You can have a bit of a yard and not feel scrunched up against your neighbors. The center of the neighborhood is the Boyle playground which is large and very well kept. There is always some team sport happening. Parents seem to make the schools work for them: a combination of public, parochial, and charter. Shops are nearby and neighbors are pleasant. One thing I really like is the old houses and curvy streets and a few creeks. Pennypack Environmental Trust is a short drive away.
