There aren't that many "shops" unless you go closer to Pentagon City Mall, however, there are plenty of grocery stores/CVS types as well as locally owned restaurants. Additionally, there are a handful of apartment complexes that provide access to the local area.
The general atmosphere of Arlington is great no matter where you live. People are generally minding their own business but when you speak to them they're very nice. There are so many things to do and places to go. There are over 500 different restaurants in Arlington. And if there is ever a time where you get bored then you can go to Roslyn, D.c, Old Town in Alexandria which are all so close to they city.
They're more police than we need in Arlington. Within 18 miles we have over 300 police officers so it's really common to see multiple people getting pulled over for speeding or violating a traffic law on the way home.
