I come from a small town in Michigan between Flint and Pontiac. There wasn't much to do back home, and to venture off into the cities was a balancing act between safety, travel time, and convenience. Living in Ocean View, Norfolk, Virginia, we have everything! There's so much more to do here, and the weather is wonderful. Most people we meet are kind and helpful; a change from what I'm used to in Michigan. I also love that the military is nearby, where I have a lot in common with other military families. Our family is nearly 1,000 miles away and we don't get to see them often. It's a challenge we're learning how to overcome, and with the companionship of other service members, it's not as hard as it would have been had we done this alone. There is always a family friendly festival in the Hampton Roads area which gives us so many opportunities to meet new people, experience new things, and spend time with the family outside of our home. We love exploring, and the Chesapeake Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, and the beach offers us tons to explore! Last weekend my husband's side of the family drove down to visit us, and we were able to hike around the Great Dismal Swamp. There's such beautiful scenery there, and canals to awe at, to respect, and honor those who made them. My family lives off of Granby Street, so there could be a little less traffic noise - just being honest. Besides that, I can't think of anything I'd change. I tell my husband that this is the best place I've ever lived.

We live in the city, and there is going to be crime. But I haven't dealt with anything out of the ordinary. Maybe I can say that because I lived in Flint for part of my life. There was one time we noticed some younger guys exchanging drugs in a car not far from our house. The drugs didn't look anything more than marijuana. Then they left there car there and drove off in another car. We called the police to report what we had seen and they responded within two minutes. My husband and I were amazed. The next day the car was removed by one of the young guys and an older gentleman, assuming the older man was his father. No harm, no foul. But I was glad to see that we were adequately protected when we reached out in concern to the Norfolk police.
It is clear that this area has a lot of people who are here because of the military and that affects how strong the community can be. Having said that, when we first moved here, one of our neighbors came over and offered us pie his wife made. It was very kind. On St. Patrick's Day, another neighbor introduces us to a lot of other people in the area. We feel welcome and are comfortable with talking with everyone in the area. I'm currently working on a new friendship with a woman down the street who recently had a baby. I love babies.
