It's a "decent" area to live in there are elementary schools and middle schools nearby for those who have kids, but with that, you have to beware of pedophiles and sex offenders living in the area. In addition, while this area is the suburbs there have been quite a few of alarming crimes in the area such as a hostage situation that took place near my house about a couple of years ago.
Life in this part of Tacoma can best be described as an example of the uptown city experience. As a current resident and registered college student, the majority of my time is spent in the downtown, or new Tacoma, area; so, my familiarity with the district is limited to the late afternoon to the late night hours. However, I have noted that the nightlife around the area can range from bustling - especially during holidays - to nonexistent, primarily consisting of members of the homeless population in quieter times of the year. Though the area is up and coming, with newer businesses in operation, there still exists a surprising degree of not only poverty, but homelessness as well.
I've lived in NE Tacoma now for the past 10 years and enjoy it so much I'm now raising my children out here. My son is enrolled in the local elementary school and I'm very involved in the PTA. currently serving as the Treasurer. It's a great neighborhood that is centrally located between Tacoma and Seattle with easy access to the freeways and public transportation. There a lots of families in this area and public places to enjoy with your kids. The beaches and parks are beautiful and easy to visit. There are lots of shopping opportunities both in Tacoma and Federal Way and during the summer months there are various farmers markets to visit for our local's finest. I really can't see myself living anywhere else and recommend everyone to visit!
