The largest employer in this area is the military. We have quite a few Naval bases, Norfolk being the world's largest. There are also bases for the Air Force and Marines. I am a stay-at-home mom and college student so I cannot speak from experience. However, I do occasionally browse the classifieds as well as other job websites to see what is out there. I do not think that it would be difficult to find a job that pays a fare wage. Again, this is a very populated area so there are plenty of jobs available! A great "self-employment" opportunity in this area would be to become an Uber Partner. With so much military, the weekend nightlife is abundant and everyone needs a designated driver. We are a "surging area" for Uber as there are more riders than drivers. The amount of money that could be made is unbelievable!

During the summer, it is beautiful and much warmer than I had originally anticipated! This winter hit us pretty hard as they aren't prepared for heavy snow. We did get quite a bit of snow this year and the roads were a mess for a few days. My husband was actually out of work for 11 days straight! Fall was beautiful, I loved watching the leaves change. All in all, the weather is great. You get just enough of each season. As soon as you are sick of the cold and snow, it starts to warm up. Just when you've had enough heat and humidity, it is cooling down again.
OneLife fitness is a chain that has quite a few locations in this area. Their facilities are nearly brand-new and beautiful. I enjoy being there because I am surrounded by people that also care about their health and wellness. There are also a few places that have excellent outdoor areas to exercise, like Mount Trashmore. Unfortunately, in ratio, a small portion of the population takes advantage of these and I think it is mostly military and their spouses. Sentara is the major hospital chain in the area and we have had a good experience with them. However, I think generally this area isn't too clean so it does distort my opinion of workout facilities, medical facilities, food facilities, everything.
