I own two properties and currently live in (on) Mt. Washington and couldn't ask for a better area. As a young adult, you are close to everything Pittsburgh has to offer - minutes from downtown, south side, north shore, south hills, station square, etc. Getting to work for me and my girlfriend is a breeze. The night life is surprisingly on the rise, with tons of college kids and young adults flocking to Shiloh St. every Friday and Saturday night. The only thing missing is a gym, but being 5-10 minutes from South Side and other nearby spots, it's not much of an issue. I haven't witnessed or heard of any serious crime issues since moving here two years ago, other than having my car broken into (nothing stolen or broken) once, which sadly seems to happen everywhere these days. Can't speak on behalf of schooling systems, but for a young adult with real estate interests, I can't imagine a better place!
I lived on the Duquesne Heights side and felt pretty safe. There are lots of house flips being done here. Some are being done well and others are slapping trendy fixtures over a mess. Many homes have foundation issues from old mines collapsing. The end along Allentown and back of the mount is pretty high crime. The closer to Grandview Ave the better quality homes typically are. Rockslides mudslides and winter weather can make it tough getting up or down. There are other nearby neighborhoods you can get more for your money without the problems. I ended up getting out for nearly Crafton Heights
The streets need to be repaved and few homes have driveways and the street parking is tight. There is access to public transportation, the bus, the train, the incline, and biking trails. The park across the street is clean and well kept. Shopping and restaurants are only .5 miles away so everything is very walkable, if you don't mind the hills. The view is the BEST in Pittsburgh.
