I love it here! Its a pretty great neighborhood to be in. It has upgraded a lot to be more modern and more places to eat than in the past. It is more for going to eat places, not much on the side of alcoholic drinking places like bars, more so for family and friends. Traffic is tight here though with it having only 1 main road, so knowing the side neighborhood roads can make commutes easier, but those also can get pretty traffic.
I’ve lived in Mira Mesa for the past 6 years. It’s changed a lot with new restaurants opening in the neighborhood. Property values have skyrocketed. The new smart traffic lights have made it a lot faster to commute. I can get from the 805 to the 15 in about 15 minutes. The proximity to Sorrento valley business gives a lot of access to well paying jobs in biotech. There’s great schools. The neighborhood feels safe. There’s lots of people walking with kids, pets or exercising. Plenty of Asian restaurants in the vicinity and the beach is only 15-20 minutes away.
On the downside, cars drive through our neighborhoods really fast and you have to be always vigilant as a pedestrian or on a bike. Be visible and wear bright clothes or lights when walking at night because the streets are not well lit. More homeless people seem to be taking residence in the area because there’s a canyon nearby. There is some theft of mail or car break-ins occurring and vandalism. Serious crime is not common.

Friendly people but you can tell the city puts almost no funding towards amenities like parks and the recreation center. I grew up in Mira Mesa and the rec center is still as run down as when I was younger. Years ago they talked about renovating it and also building a bridge connecting it to the high school across the street for the kids safety and nothing has ever been done about it. Where is the pool/aquatic center they planned for? And many of the strip malls are old and run down. It is embarrassing to be right between Scripps Ranch and UTC/La Jolla and get no funding. Mira Mesa has been forgotten about when it comes to funding and getting stuff done for our community. Many of the cases opened on the SD Get it Done app stay open and never fixed. Streets are run down and falling apart. No one enforces sidewalk encroachment. You can tell it’s a lower class neighborhood so politicians avoid helping. I am embarrassed when I tell people where I live.
