Currently, I am a resident in Mantua, Philadelphia. There are many great things about this neighborhood, yet some bad aspects exist also. Mantua is a low-income neighborhood. There are a lot of churches, abandoned houses, basketball courts, and corner stores. Only a few public, elementary schools are in the area. Unlike the elementary schools nearby, High School of the Future(Special Admissions), near Mantua, has a positive reputation in the area. Mantua is a major food desert. In order to buy organic/healthy foods, one would have to travel to the neighboring area, University City, which looks a lot better than Mantua, and has many more resources. Mantua possesses a high service of public transportation for means of travel. If planning on attending college at University of Penn., Drexel University, University of the Sciences, or even Community College of Philadelphia, there is a short duration of commuting. Overall, it's easy to excel here educationally.
I have lived in west Philadelphia for more than 30 years and I love it but to many universities in the area students make to much noise and are not a part of the community MOVE OUT of my neighborhood universities
I have lived in this neighborhood for 3 years. It is not the prettiest but it is right next to Powelton village which is pretty and there are plenty of public transport options and IndieGo bike stations. I am close enough to Drexel University, just a 5 minute bike ride away or 10 minutes from Upenn. There are not many big supermarkets around though. I have to travel to Aldi, Fresh Grocer or center city (using the Drexel shuttle) for my groceries.
