I prefer a place with higher population density because I do enjoy a city setting for the agglomeration of stores and shops. I do not live in the nicest part of Worcester so I can't give a review based on the best neighborhoods but I can say that I live near the downtown area (which may be more ruckus) and it's not bad at all. I must say that Worcester is a college city--so many colleges around, it makes for a better school system despite underfunding.

The immediate Main South area of Worcester leaves much to be desired. Most of it is cheap Asian or Latino restaurants, and many mom and pop type barber shops and bodega stores. The larger Worcester/Shrewsbury area is better in terms of great restaurants and bars. I would enjoy more businesses like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Wegman's, IKEA, etc. In addition, there doesn't seem to be any higher end electronics stores, such as Best Buy or the Apple Store. In terms of clothing, the nearby Blackstone Mall has a variety of selections.
There might be crime in the area, but so long as your no affiliated or involved with the wrong crowds, you should be okay. Most crime are gang or drug related, so again, so long as you stay away from that, you should be fine. Police are pretty friendly and respectful, so long as you are to them. However, if your a person of color, tread carefully.
