The Highlands is truly one of the most interesting neighborhoods in the city. Centered around Bardstown Rd, this area offers reasonable housing (especially apartments for university students), eclectic shops, diverse and authentic dining experiences, and a propensity for healthful living. Farmer's markets, yoga studios, corner coffee shops, and local art are widespread among the neighborhood. Truly a "little Portland" on the east end of Louisville.
Depending on the time of day, traffic can get slightly congested--especially when people feel the need to park in the right lane, which switches to a driving lane at 4:00pm. Nightlife is exciting and centered around local bars; but even so, this area is much safer at night than downtown (4th St Live) and Uber drivers are readily available.

The Highlands is a part of Louisville, KY that runs along both sides of Bardstown Road from Broadway to the Watterson Expressway, which is a distance of about four miles. While the character of this section of Bardstown road is best described as vibrant, youthful and a bit bohemian, the surrounding neighborhoods are populated with both large and small homes dating from the early 1900s. Some are quite large and stately. Bardstown Road is well known for its eclectic array of shops, bars, coffee houses, grocery stores and restaurants serving every possible type of cuisine. The vast majorities of the buildings are no taller than 2 stories and zoning regulations have resulted in the preservation of their original facades. It has something for everyone including a farmers market. The housing stock includes single family homes, apartments and condominiums. http://homeslouisvilleky.com/the-highlands-louisville-ky/
The Highlands is the best place to live in Louisville. Everything you would want to do is within walking distance or a short Uber drive away, including great restaurants, nightlife, boutiques, and art galleries.
