A wonderful, sad place...
Glory days gone, judged in the context of the surrounding neighbourhoods that are MUCH worse. Some of the absolute best people you would ever meet, anywhere. There is a sense of community here, but there's also a lot of people leaving; while it may be safe by Southside Chicago standards, that's sort of like saying it's "clean by India standards". Life's just too short to always be on edge, but if you're single, or you just don't care, it's a cheap place to live and still actually, technically, be in Chicago.
The main economic engines are pizza places, the Ford Plant and Social Security Disability.

The Chicago housing market HACKED! Hegewisch is definitely the last affordable neighborhood worth living in within Chicago. I've lived here for three years. Super low property taxes, too! It's clean, quiet and safe. You can own a house with a garage, basement, and yard for less than it costs to rent a two-bedroom apartment in most areas. Keep your money to eat, drink, and travel. You'll need a car. Good thing you'll have a lot of money left to buy a new one.
Overall, Hegewisch has the best community involvement I have seen in any neighborhood I have lived in. It is not the safest or wealthiest neighborhood, but everyone tries to make the most out of what they have.
