Forest Hills was home for about 23 years until 2019. The schools (elementary/middle) were about what you may have expected from the NYC public school system but, provided a good foundation from in education and social skills. It was safe for kids to roam about and served as a fruitful home to a diverse community for growth. Commuting was necessary for high school (and later, work); transit was extremely convenient with the number of local bus/train stops but was often a hit or miss when it came to reliability. The area was always quite lively and even more so as time went on. The food/drink options have only expanded but at the cost of many mom/pop shops closing down.
I have recently visited a few times to see how things are holding up. Diversity seems down, Garden residents are noticeably more pretentious, streets are overcrowded (garbage, homeless, cars, scooters, etc.), actual reports of crime, foul odors, and the general vibe is not as welcoming. It's a shadow of it's former self.

The best place to live in Queens County, New York. Surrounded by lakes and forest, friendly, centrally located, easy commute, great schools, family oriented hidden gem. Surprisingly still affordable!
Forest Hills is a friendly, diverse, incredibly livable neighborhood with amazing access into the city. Truly an overlooked gem in NYC!
