Within a ten-block radius from my house, there are several locally-owned retail and thrift stores that I frequent. There are several successful locally-owned restaurants that I occasionally visit. There are four large grocery stores, so accessibility of groceries is never an issue. The grocery options are not mom-and-pop shops, but they are not national corporations either. Most cater to the southeastern United States and are therefore not wholly unconnected from the consumer.
As a college student, it's easy for me to locate internships with local companies and summer jobs in retail or grocery stores. However, post-graduate employment opportunities are limited outside the fields of IT, accounting, and managerial positions. As a prospective graphic designer, I'm well aware that I will need to move to a metropolitan area for my work to gain significant exposure. There is a moderate arts scene in the downtown St. Petersburg area, but nothing substantial enough for me to make a living off of my art career alone.
Most of the houses are well-kept. The houses are mostly one-story, built within the past 20 years. The housing is relatively affordable, even for first-time home buyers. There are very few abandoned properties; the occasional vacant lot exists and safety in these areas is occasionally a concern, and I generally avoid those areas at night. As you move farther west, the housing situation deteriorates slightly.
