I moved here recently from the west coast and quite enjoy living in the East Rock area. Plenty of restaurants within walking distance and a quick drive / bike ride to downtown. The neighborhood is packed with Yale grad students and is colloquially known as the 'grad school ghetto' - so lots of extremely bright and interesting young people that don't have a lot of spending power, which suits me just fine. The public schools are sub-par and I'd be be remiss to enroll my young child in them - with the one exception being Hooker Elementary. If the city can turn around the school system and lower property taxes (which are obscene) I think people would flock to New Haven.

There's a mix - there's not enough grocery stores or pharmacies, but great amenities like restaurants and cafes.
Not many jobs available in the area, but more opportunities are available outside my immediate neighborhood.
