I love living in Downtown Austin because it is so convenient to get to the things I want and need. The grocery stores are all around the edge of downtown so driving no more than 10 minutes away from any given point is awesome. I really like the transportation of bikes, scooters, and buses. Something that I would like to see change though is the fact that it is really hard to find a place to live that is not so expensive. It is such a great environment to live I wish more people could experience it!
Downtown, Austin is not a good place to raise a family or kids unless you have a large amount of money and want them to go to private schools centered around downtown. That being said the crime and safety is pretty good for a downtown but is still not going to compare to suburbs crime and safety (I would give it a B). The nightlife is incredible (SIXTH STREET IS A TEXAS ICON AND MORE IMPORTANTLY A SOUTHERN ICON). All the bars are on sixth street and police walk around on horses. Austin downtown is only affordable to the upper class and above. If you come from areas where you spend a million dollars on a two bedroom condo then yes you can afford to live in Downtown, Austin but I personally think I would use that money to hit Europe or do something exciting with my life (not on a mortgage). Anyways, Austin is the most expensive city in Texas. Which makes it pricey. As far as diversity goes it lacks compared to many other Texas cities.
I can't see myself living anywhere in the U.S. that isn't Austin, Texas. I'm a native Texan living in it's Capitol and loving it. As a world traveler, I've seen many places, but nothing compares to Austin. There's a laid back vibe, endless sunshine, amazing variety and quality of food, phenomenal internationally recognized music scene, several top higher education institutions, entertainment galore, spectacular Texas hill country scenery and an unrivaled pride for our city and for life. If you don't live in Austin, Texas, you're not living.
