It's generally very peaceful and quiet in Grand Rapids. The spring and summer are beautiful when the flora comes to life in a vibrant green, and in the fall, the trees are a sight to behold in all their gold, red, and orange hues. The city is steadily growing, with more local businesses and restaurants popping up, and as a result, the downtown area has begun to come alive with promises of more colorful experiences for future residents.
However, the winters here are long, cold and unpredictable. One day it can reach the high 40's and then suddenly it drops to the single digits and there's a winter storm advisory the next day. As such, road conditions can get a bit dicey and only those who are well-seasoned winter drivers can get around fairly easily. During the summers, the days can be extremely hot, reaching even over 100 degrees Fahrenheit at times, not to mention the allergy issues during the transition of the seasons. And although most residents here are friendly, the society overall is homogenous and as such, if one is a minority living here, not all the residents will be as welcoming.
So while Grand Rapids can be a beautiful city at times, with its lack of diversity and troublesome winters, I may not choose to live here again. However, I have grown attached to the place and it has been good to me.

The prevalence of crimes isn't very high. The one time I had been truly afraid was during a series of in-house burglaries that occurred near my neighborhood. There have also been very few cases of missing children as well, but overall the crime rate appears to be quite low here. As for the visibility of police, I have only seen them along freeways and rural roads. Of course, during larger events, such as ArtPrize, the police are much more visible.
The public services are very good in my area. Roads seem to be quickly plowed in winter and salted frequently. Roads are being repaired much more quickly and more roads being done since last summer's city millage passed so that is great.
Police and fire services are closeby. Really like our mayor. He has done great things for our community including free recycling and environmentally conscious. Unfortunately he is now term limited. Nothing great to say about other local reps. Like our governor a lot. He has improved Michigan's economy, unemployment rate and made our state healthy again.
