Coquina Key is a quiet neighborhood that offers families a beautiful water-front location for their residence. Living up to its name of being the "Friendly Island", the community is very tight-knit as our neighbors often plan casual get-togethers, hang-out with one another in the downtown, or play with one another in the neighborhood soccer league. Additionally, the neighborhood is relatively safe and quiet, with incidents of criminal activity occurring on very rare occasions. However, Coquina Key is segregated both economically and racially. In fact, the inner section of the island is home to its mostly upper-middle class Caucasian American residents, while its section outer section is mainly occupied its working class African American residents. Although there is no special rule that enforces this segregation, the residents of Coquina Key's inner section have been known to call the police when an African American resident wanders into their area of the neighborhood.
My wife and I chose Coquina Key due to it’s off the beaten path and charming and convenient location. We relocated from Maryland and were looking for a friendly, diverse and affordable neighborhood. We like the fact that there are old, young, diverse ethnicities and housing. In the 2 months since being in our home, we have met our neighbors, walked in the park often and are learning to play pickleball on the pickleball courts in the park. This is probably the most affordable island in Florida.
Coquina Key is a little gem, especially if you are lucky enough to get a beautiful water view. Close to downtown.
