In my area, there is a wide variety of shops. You can get everything you need just by walking a few blocks. There are a few big chain grocery stores, a salon, a fitness center, a hardware store, a liquor store, a pet store, and many other local businesses not owned by big chains. By living and shopping in this area, you can get everything you need and support mom-and-pop shops! It's the best of all possible scenarios.

This is a mixed use community with residential homes and businesses scattered through the neighborhood. There are several restaurants, a dry cleaner, local grocery store as well as chain grocery stores, a post office, and several coffee shops within walking distance. Most shops are locally owned, and those that are generally the larger grocery stores and coffee shop brands. Frequenting the locally owned shops and restaurants increases the feel of community in the area. Shops owners take pride in the upkeep of their businesses and in getting to know the local community to create a family feel in most shops and restaurants.
The economy in Denver has rebounded better than most other parts of the nation. There is a strong job market and unemployment has been in decline. In return, the housing market is building again and creating a paradox where the cost of living is becoming difficult to sustain. Housing prices and rental prices are higher than many residents can maintain, and there is a pattern of renters having to move to different parts of Denver and my neighborhood catering only to high income home buyers.
