I have lived in Oakland for 4 years while attending the University of Pittsburgh. It has access to many things and as far as being a college campus, it is very unique. Unfortunately, it is not very clean and does not offer many options for nice living conditions. There is ample options for dining, but one thing it needs is a grocery store within walking distance.
Pittsburgh provides a community where there is a niche for every walk of life. With multiple colleges in the area the young life is bustling. Each weekend there is a wide array of activities available from pickle festivals to free concerts. If huge events don't pique your interest there are streets lined with restaurants, bars, and coffee shops; each with their own unique atmosphere. If you are a sports fanatic there is no lack of spirit in the city; multiple stadiums are just a bus ride away. Or if you just simply want to take a stroll down the street the architecture is breathtaking.
The city police are available in an abundance along with assistance from campus police. City events have a heavy police presence. Unfortunately with every city comes crime, but for the most part there is a safe atmosphere.
