Brownsville is an affordable neighborhood - and isn't very visually appealing, in terms of the look and feel of buildings and homes in the area. But there are plenty of food options, supermarkets with healthy foods, and pharmacies nearby. Transportation is also not an issue you can easily get to downtown Brooklyn in 25 minutes on the train. I would recommend living here for a short time period, but not forever. also a relatively safe area, no one bothers you people mostly stay to themselves.
Brownsville is probably the most dangerous neighborhood in NYC due to the poverty and high concentration of public housing, but it's no where near the levels of west Chicago or north philly. I wouldn't recommend living here unless you need something very affordable, but if you do, watch your surroundings, and try to be friendly and get to know your neighbors, and you'll be fine.
I love how there are transportation nearby, House of worship, schools and everything you need also suitable to raise a family. There are free activities for children and other resources for adults through numerous community based organization. However, it is a low-moderate income community- it is sometimes neglected when it comes to solves issues. It's just not fair for the residents here also crime ridden
