I've never been in an area where so many neighbors are friendly and watch out for one another (and I'm ex USAF and lived all over the country). The problem is that LBPD isn't paying much attention to the area, and petty crime is on the rise. They also need to move to permitted parking, like every other beach town in LA county.

As far as affordability goes, it's not cheap, but nowhere is near the beach. As far as beach neighborhoods go, it's fairly affordable.

Visually appealing, nice restaurants and local beaches. Belmont Shore is not very diverse but is safe for children. Various bars, breweries and pubs. Dog friendly beaches and parks.
Belmont Shore is a great little beach town located in the East side of Long Beach, CA. The main drag is called 2nd Street and it is packed with shopping and fantastic restaurants. My favorite burger place is a gastropub called Tavern on 2. They have amazing burgers and duck tacos that are to die for!! A huge beer selection too. They were also featured on the show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Too Cool.
