I moved to Avondale 6 years ago. This neighborhood has grown tremendously in opportunity and diversity since I first arrived. It's central location in Chicago allows for quick access to downtown, lake-front neighborhoods, and O'Hare. Avondale also lies close to major modes of transportation such as the blue line, the 24 hour Belmont bus, and the Dan-Ryan highway. This provides an ideal situation for my wife to work in the suburbs and for me to attend school and work without having to own a second car. Avondale also provides a rich dinning and nightlife with restaurants ranging from Irish to Turkish, and many neighborhood bars open for socializing and meeting fellow residents of Avondale.
After living in the area for the past 23 years there have been positive and negative changes. Violence has increased significantly which has increased the amount of cops in the area. Aside from violence, taxes have increased quite a bit. The positive thing is that businesses have opened up in the area and night life has expanded down Pulaski. Particularly between Addison and Milwaukee. Another thing I appreciate is that gentrification hasn't completely affected this neighborhood. Its a very rich Latino and Polish area. Last, considering I'm a college student I have very easy access to CTA.
I love that Avondale is affordable and close to neighborhoods with great nightlife, shopping, and restaurants.
